THE FIRST BALLOT OF THE LATE NELSON MANDELA INANDA

THE FISRT BALLOT OF THE LATE NELSON MANDELA INANDA

Nelson Mandela was released from prison in 1990 after spending 27 years in jail. On 27 April, 1994 Mandela cast his first ballot vote at Inanda, KwaZulu Natal.

This event took place at Ohlange High School because Mandela was honoring a hero who played a role in the South African liberation struggle, John Langalibalele Dube. He was a founder of SANNC, and he fought for blacks to get proper education. This Inanda Museum is beneficial for the history, especially for the next generation, to have proper understanding of where the country came from. Inside the Museum, there is part of what was happening during the elections and the words Mandela was emphasizing when he voted. It also shows some interesting features, one of which is painted black and the other white, which represents the apartheid era where blacks and whites were separated", Ngwenya explained.

On Election Day, Mandela paid a visit to Dube’s gravesite to report that report  that South Africa was free. These are the words that Nelson Mandela left to Dube since they were fighting for the freedom of black people until Mandela won and Dube was no more.

One of the local residents, Andisiwe Sbisi, said, “Inanda should be among those sports that receive full attention since it is a stop along the liberation route. The first vote of Nelson Mandela held at Inanda community also shows full respect for the community. But the state of Ohlange High School does not show that there is care for it since Dube built it in order for black people to be educated. This should be one of the school they take care of as a reminder of what the leaders sacrificed for.”

This history remains one of the vital part of the apartheid era.
